Overview

According to the FSSAI Act, 2008, any entity that runs a food product business must have FSSAI registration. The food license registration certificate ensures the quality and purity of food in India. All the entities running food business can register at Food safety and standard authority of India to manufacture, distribute, or transport food products.

Entities that must hold FSSAI registration

According to the FSSAI Act, 2008, The FSSAI registration is compulsory for all the entities such as:

1) Manufacturer or seller of any food product

2) Retailer, hawker, and vendors of food products

3) Temporary stallholders such as sweet shops, juice stalls or any other

4) Hawking or selling packages of fresh food products on moving carts 

5) Small scale or cottage industries that run food businesses with annual turnover less than INR 12 lakhs

6) The small scale industries with a production capacity of food or having a collection of milk up to 500 liters

7) The SMEs that have slaughtering capacity of 2 large animals, ten small animals, and 50 poultry birds per day 

All the minor food businesses must obtain their FSSAI registration by applying form A.  

Entities that must possess State FSSAI license

The state licenses are not for minor food businesses. But the food businesses that do not classify as a minor food business must obtain State FSSAI license such entities are:

1) The hotels that provide lodging, meals and other services

2) Restaurants and bars that have turnover upto INR 20 Crore every year

3) All the clubs and canteens

4) Caterers that have an annual turnover of upto INR 20 Crore

5) Food vending agencies that have more than 100 vending machines in one state

6) Mid-day meal caterers with annual turnover of upto INR 20 Crore

7) Mid-day meal canteens with more than INR 12 lakhs turnover

8) Food products markers with upto INR 20 Crore turnover

9) Food retailers with an annual turnover of upto INR 20 Crore

10) Food supplier with an annual turnover of upto INR 20 Crore

11) Food products distributor with upto INR 20 Crore annual turnover

12) Food products wholesale with annual turnover upto INR 30 Crore.

13) Food transporter having more than 100 vehicles and annual turnover upto INR 30 Crore

14) Dairy units processing over 500 liters milk per day

15) Vegetables oil processing units that are having an annual turnover of more than INR 12 lakhs.

16) Slaughterhouses that process more than 50 poultry birds, 11 small animals, or 3 large animals

17) Meat processing unit having a capacity of processing more than 500 kg per day

18) Grains, Pulses, cereals milling units

19) Food manufacturing business that has annual turnover more than INR 12 lakhs

20) All the storage units (cold or atmospheric controlled unit) having up to turn over more than INR 12 lakh per annum

Entities that must possess Central FSSAI license

1) Five Star hotels that provide lodging, meals and other services

2) Restaurants and bars that have turnover more than INR 20 Crore every year

3) Caterers that have an annual turnover of more than INR 20 Crore

4) Food vending agencies that have more than 100 vending machines in two or more state

5) Mid-day meal caterers with annual Turnover of more than INR 20 Crore

6) Food products importers without any Turnover or capacity limit

7) Food products exporters without any Turnover or capacity limit

8) Selling food through e-commerce without any Turnover or capacity limit

9) Food products marketers with more than INR 20 Crore turnover

10) Food retailers with an annual turnover of more than INR 20 Crore

11) Food supplier with an annual turnover of more than INR 20 Crore

12) Food products distributor with more than INR 20 Crore annual turnover

13) Food products wholesale with annual turnover more than INR 30 Crore.

14) Food transporter having more than 100 vehicles and annual turnover more than INR 30 Crore

15) Dairy units processing over 50,000 liters milk per day

16) Vegetables oil processing units having a capacity of more than producing 2MT per day

17) Slaughterhouses that process more than 1000 poultry birds, 150 small animals or 50 large animals

18) Meat processing unit having a capacity of processing more than 500 kg per day or 150 MT per annum 

19) Food manufacturing business that has the capacity of producing more than 2MT per day

20) All the food storage units having a capacity of producing 50,000 MT per day

21) A cold storage unit that has more than 10,000 MT per day

22) Food business activity at Seaport, airport or at railways station
